Where Tea meets Taste
through East meets West

We welcome you to Chapels on Whatley, where the essence of our story intertwines with flavors that transcend borders.

For over 18 years, we have been a cherished part of Perth, nestled in the heart of Maylands.

The Chapel’s story is a fusion of cultures and backgrounds, drawing inspiration from Glenn’s Eurasian heritage.

Picture a century-old heritage building blending seamlessly with Asian influences, all wrapped in the charm of all our quirky personalities. While widely recognized as a teahouse, our journey doesn’t stop there.

Since November 2023, the same team that brought you My Bayon Restaurant now invites you to experience the union of tea and taste at Chapels.

We are more than just a teahouse; we are where flavor meets finesse. With the largest tea selection boasting over 200 varieties from around the world, each cup tells a story. Complementing this diverse tea experience is our Eurasian-inspired dishes, a reflection of our upbringing and backgrounds that seamlessly blend the east and west.

Our love for Eurasian culture is not just on our plates; it’s woven into the very fabric of our establishment. Born overseas in Southeast Asia/ Cambodia and raised in Australia amidst various origins, we’ve had the honour to experience the best of both worlds. This inspiration manifests in our venue, offering a casual street food vibe in the courtyard and an Indochina charm in the front.
In many countries, tea is more than a beverage; it’s a cultural connection. At Chapels, we celebrate the art of communal dining, a cherished tradition in Asian cultures. Sharing dishes with loved ones is not just a meal; it’s a social activity, an opportunity to connect and share experiences.

Join us as we delve deeper into our Eurasian roots through the rich tapestry of tea and food. Chapels on Whatley is more than a place to dine; it’s a celebration of heritage, a fusion of Flavors, and an invitation to explore the beauty of diversity through every sip and every bite.

Welcome to our table, where stories unfold and cultures converge.”

Chapels – Where Tea meets Taste through East meets West

Meet Our Team

Owned and operated by Zack Thurlow, Vorleak Srey, Kanharath Vou, and Toan Phan—family who grew up in Darwin—we are deeply honoured to carry forward a legacy that means so much to us.

Chapels on Whatley was originally founded by Keith Archur and Glenn Bartel, who have been at the heart of this beloved establishment for nearly two decades. Keith, with his Australian background, and Glenn, with his Singaporean and Malaysian heritage, brought a rich mix of Eurasian culture to Chapels, making it what it is today. This shared cultural connection has allowed us to seamlessly transition into the new ownership, bringing our own diverse influences while preserving the spirit of what makes Chapels so special.

Having taken over in November 2023, after an 18-year reign by Keith and Glenn, we are proud to continue the tradition they started. Our bond with Keith and Glenn has grown beyond just a business relationship; they are now family. Not only do they remain involved as partners in supplying us with the unique teas that define Chapels Fine Tea, but they also continue to be a cherished part of our journey.

Our team brings a rich tapestry of cultural influences to Chapels. Vorleak and Kanharath, sisters who grew up in Cambodia, see food as a way of life—a means of socializing and celebrating culture. Zack and Toan, with their New Zealand roots, bring Western influences that perfectly complement the Eastern traditions we hold dear. Together, we offer a dining experience that marries East and West, showcasing the vibrant flavours of Eurasian culture.

As the founders of My Bayon in Northbridge (link) , we have always believed in the power of food to bring people together. Now, at Chapels on Whatley, our mission is to unite people and cultures through tea, taste, and the sharing of stories.

We want every customer to feel at home here, embraced by the same warmth and love that has defined this place for years.

We invite you to join our family, experience our culture, and become part of the story that continues to unfold at Chapels on Whatley.

Our High Teas

Transport yourself back to the days of old, during British colonisation, high tea in the French quarter of Shanghai in the 1920s-30’s or Singapore High Tea at the Raffles hotel.

Even in the grand hotels of India or in the port of Melaka in Malaysia all have a culture steeped in British history ever evolving and manifesting into the Eurasian heritage we see today.
